The Road to Becoming a Naturopath: Madeleine’s Journey

A Naturopath’s Life

Heya!

I thought I’d share a little bit more about my journey to becoming a naturopath, beyond what you’d read on my about page.

Truth be told, I found naturopathy by complete fluke. I worked in HR within an IT company in Perth city - I loved the team, but the job wasn’t what I wanted to do long term and I eventually grew to dislike working there. However, every day on the drive home leaving the city I would see a building with this logo that just stood out to me. After a couple of months, I eventually decided to Google the building with the logo, and enter Endeavour College of Natural Health.

Now I should disclose that I had never even heard of a naturopath at this stage, so I had no idea what it was or what the word meant! I found it by searching through Endeavour’s website, was looking at the degree outline and it just sounded amazing - biology, science and traditional healing methods, herbs, and so much more. I was so excited reading about it, but I had just deferred from 2 years into a fine arts degree and wasn’t sure if I wanted to start a new degree.

Fast forward about a month. I’d see the building every day after work, the naturopathy course was constantly open in my web browser, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Finally, I decided to jump right in - without having ever seen a naturopath - and I never looked back!

I eventually saw my first naturopath, who I still work with today and absolutely adore, just after beginning the degree. After my initial consult with her I burst into tears in my car, purely relief from finding someone who listened to me in an appointment that didn’t feel rushed. I finally felt like I had someone on my side who could help.

In the lead up to this appointment, I had been experiencing debilitating menstrual and ovulatory pain and was relying on an incredibly high number of painkillers most days just to get by, which in turn messed with my stomach. My mental health was all over the place, I was experiencing acne, and, girl, dermatitis. It was so bad. My eyelids were swollen and inflammed, my legs looked like a scaly lizard’s, I had perioral dermatitis - it was all happening and I didn’t know what to do.

Studying the degree and working with a naturopath resulted in a complete life change - my mental health improved, I began making tweaks to my diet and lifestyle, I found my community, and I found my passion. It completely changed the trajectory of my life, and I’m so grateful for it.

So, that’s a little bit more about my story!
